People come for one thing: an early-morning dive at Monad Shoal to watch pelagic thresher sharks visit a cleaning station. The sharks are there all year; the season only changes sea conditions.

概覽Overview

島上沒有汽車，潛店與度假村集中在 Bounty Beach 一帶。長尾鯊眼大、怕光，多在日出前後至上午九點左右活動，因此典型行程約清晨五點出船。

3 至 6 月海面最平靜、水溫最高、能見度最好。1、2 月是東北季風尾段，船程可能顛簸但仍可潛水；7、8 月進入西南季風，大部分日子仍可出船。9 至 12 月颱風最活躍，2013 年超強颱風海燕曾重創此地。

There are no cars on the island. Dive shops and resorts sit along Bounty Beach. Threshers have large eyes and avoid bright light, so they are most active from around sunrise to about 9 a.m.; boats usually leave around 5 a.m.

March to June has the calmest sea, the warmest water and the best visibility. January and February are the tail of the northeast monsoon, with possible bumpy crossings but diving continues. July and August bring the southwest monsoon, yet boats still go out most days. September to December is the peak typhoon period; Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the island hard in 2013.

潛水概況The diving

以船潛為主。Monad Shoal 是一座海底台地，頂部約十多至二十米，長尾鯊清潔站位於台地邊緣，約 25 至 35 米深；潛水員沿繩下潛，在界線繩後跪下或懸停等候。Gato Island 與 Lighthouse 屬初級至中級，Doña Marilyn 沉船屬中級至高級。連續數天清晨深潛，建議使用高氧空氣（Nitrox），沒有深潛經驗者宜先考取進階潛水員證照。

Mostly boat diving. Monad Shoal is an underwater plateau with a top at roughly 10-20 m; the thresher cleaning stations are on its edge at about 25-35 m. Divers descend on a line and kneel or hover behind a rope barrier. Gato Island and Lighthouse suit beginner to intermediate divers; the Dona Marilyn wreck is intermediate to advanced. If you dive Monad several mornings in a row, nitrox is recommended, and divers without deep experience should consider an Advanced course first.

Fewer divers; threshers and occasionally hammerheads, but less reliable than Monad.
Gato Island
Marine reserve with a tunnel where whitetip reef sharks rest; sea snakes, cuttlefish, nudibranchs.
Lighthouse
Shallow reef slope; mandarinfish mating at dusk.
Dona Marilyn wreck
Passenger ferry sunk in a 1988 typhoon, covered in soft coral.

交通Getting there

由香港飛宿霧約兩個半小時，再乘車北上至 Maya 碼頭約三至四小時，然後乘船約半小時上島。

Fly Hong Kong to Cebu (about 2.5 hours), drive north to Maya port (about 3-4 hours), then take a boat to the island (about 30 minutes).

實用提示Tips

  1. 長尾鯊是野生動物，運氣不好也會落空，一般建議安排兩三個早上。
  2. Monad Shoal 一律禁止閃光燈與強光燈；不可越過界線繩，也不可游向鯊魚。
  3. 潛入 Monad 與 Kimud 需另繳保育費及海洋公園費，款項用於社區巡邏隊。
  4. 確定運作中最近的加壓艙位於宿霧 Mandaue，需數小時車程加船程。
  5. 由宿霧搭機前，最後一潛後須等待 18 至 24 小時。
  1. Threshers are wild animals and can be missed; plan two or three mornings.
  2. No flash or strong lights at Monad Shoal. Stay behind the rope and do not swim towards the sharks.
  3. Diving Monad and Kimud requires a conservation fee plus a marine park fee, which funds community patrols.
  4. The nearest confirmed working recompression chamber is in Mandaue, Cebu, several hours away by road and boat.
  5. Wait 18-24 hours after your last dive before flying out of Cebu.
